Proterial to Manufacture Amorphous Magnetic Material Metglas in India with SSEL JV

Tirupati, India — February 28, 2026

Japan-based Proterial has announced plans to manufacture its amorphous metal material Metglas in India through a joint venture with Shirdi Sai Electricals Ltd, marking a significant step in localising advanced soft magnetic materials.

The greenfield facility, to be developed under Metglas India Pvt Ltd, a 74:26 joint venture between Proterial and SSEL Group, will be located in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh. The plant will have an initial production capacity of 30,000 tonnes per year, with construction starting in January 2026 and commissioning expected by September 2026 .

Shift toward high-efficiency transformer materials
Metglas, an amorphous alloy ribbon, is used in transformer cores to reduce no-load losses by nearly one third compared to conventional electrical steel. This makes it particularly relevant for power distribution networks where energy efficiency and loss reduction are becoming critical.

Currently, Proterial supplies Metglas to India from its Japan operations. The new facility is aimed at directly serving rising domestic demand, especially as transformer efficiency standards tighten and grid modernisation accelerates.

India becomes a strategic manufacturing base
The Tirupati plant will be Proterial’s third Metglas manufacturing facility globally, after the United States and Japan. The company has also developed advanced soft magnetic materials such as FINEMET and MaDC-A, strengthening its position across high-performance magnetic materials used in power electronics and transformers.

The move reflects a broader industry shift, where global magnetic material players are increasingly localising production in India to align with demand growth across transmission infrastructure, renewable energy, and industrial electrification.
