Bikaji Foods brings in bakery veteran Thayekunni Khaleel to build out Bikaji Bakes

Bikaji Foods International has struck a strategic partnership with veteran bakery expert Thayekunni Khaleel to speed up growth at its subsidiary, Bikaji Bakes Private Limited (BBPL). Under the agreement, Bikaji has handed over a 30 percent equity stake in BBPL to Khaleel, while holding on to a 70 percent majority stake and keeping control of the subsidiary.

The tie-up is meant to sharpen Bikaji’s footing in India’s fast-expanding bakery and packaged foods market. It pairs Khaleel’s technical know-how and international bakery experience with Bikaji’s distribution reach, retail presence and read on Indian consumers. Khaleel, best known as the founder of bakery brand Bakemart, brings more than four decades in the bakery and confectionery business. The two sides had already flagged a joint venture earlier to grow Bikaji’s bakery and frozen foods business through Bikaji Bakes — this partnership builds on that.

“Bakery is a category with significant headroom for growth in India, and we believe the next phase of that growth will be driven by a combination of world-class technical capabilities and a deep understanding of the Indian consumer,” said Deepak Agarwal, Chairman and Managing Director, Bikaji Foods International Limited. “Our partnership with Mr. Thayekunni Khaleel brings together his exceptional technical expertise and global bakery experience with Bikaji’s strengths in distribution, sales, retail, and consumer understanding. We see this as a partnership built for the future. By combining these complementary capabilities, we aim to bring global bakery practices and innovation to India while building a strong, scalable, and differentiated bakery business through Bikaji Bakes. We are confident that this collaboration will create meaningful opportunities for the business and strengthen our position in the evolving Indian bakery landscape.”

The move comes as India’s bakery sector keeps seeing rising demand across packaged cakes, biscuits, breads, frozen bakery items and ready-to-eat foods. Through Bikaji Bakes, the company wants to build a bigger footprint in bakery and food processing, beyond its core snacks and sweets business. The partnership also fits Bikaji’s wider push to diversify into high-growth food categories and strengthen its standing in India’s FMCG and packaged foods market.

Market Research Outlook: Bikaji’s equity-for-expertise deal shows FMCG players diversifying beyond core categories by acquiring niche technical talent rather than outright M&A. It reflects growing confidence in India’s packaged bakery segment, still underpenetrated versus snacks. Expect more snack/sweets majors entering adjacent bakery and frozen-food categories to capture rising urban demand.
