India’s coal gasification sector is going through a structural shift, moving from pilot plants and a handful of captive units toward large commercial projects that turn domestic coal into syngas for fertilizers, methanol, synthetic natural gas, ammonium nitrate, steel, and hydrogen, backed by the National Coal Gasification Mission, new incentive schemes, and a clear push to cut chemical and fuel imports.
According to Market Research Outlook’s latest research report, the “India Coal Gasification Market“ is expected to grow from USD 1,260 million in 2025 to USD 4,860 million by 2032, at a CAGR of 21.3%, supported by the target of gasifying 100 million tonnes of coal by 2030, the INR 37,500 crore incentive scheme approved in May 2026, projects worth INR 65,000 crore already under execution, and rising demand for domestic substitutes to imported urea, ammonia, methanol, and LNG.
Coal gasification in India is moving into a new phase. For more than a decade, the technology sat mostly in pilot plants and a few captive industrial units. That is now changing as public sector companies, steelmakers, and private conglomerates commit capital to commercial plants built around domestic coal.
What is changing is not just the number of projects, but the reason behind them. Policymakers, fertilizer makers, chemical producers, and steel companies now see coal-derived syngas as a route to energy security, a hedge against volatile LNG and methanol prices, and a way to add value to coal, rather than a costly experiment.
This shift is backed by the National Coal Gasification Mission, a 50% revenue share rebate for coal used in gasification under commercial auctions, 30-year coal linkages, and capital incentives worth up to 20% of plant and machinery cost. As a result, gasification is now planned as a strategic industrial programme tied to specific end products rather than a single technology experiment.

Growth in this sector is closely linked to the project pipeline. Eight projects awarded under the INR 8,500 crore scheme of January 2024 have received INR 6,233 crore of incentive support, and total projects worth INR 65,000 crore are under execution. Public sector players such as Coal India, BHEL, NLC India, GAIL, and Bharat Coal Gasification and Chemicals Limited are building plants for ammonium nitrate, synthetic natural gas, and methanol, while Jindal Steel, Reliance Industries, Adani Enterprises, Thermax, and New Era Cleantech are developing commercial and captive projects.
At the same time, coal-bearing states including Odisha, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu are attracting projects close to mine heads, with Maharashtra alone hosting five projects under development. With India importing over 50% of its LNG and over 80% of its methanol, and an FY2025 import bill of INR 2.77 lakh crore for these products, domestic syngas offers a large replacement opportunity.
Technology development is focused on gasifiers suited to high-ash Indian coal. BHEL has developed pressurised fluidized bed gasification (PFBG) technology, first proven at a 6.2 MW pilot plant in Tiruchirappalli in 2020 and now selected for the Lakhanpur ammonium nitrate project in Odisha. Entrained flow gasifiers dominate large fertilizer and chemical plants, while underground coal gasification is entering commercial blocks for the first time. As a result, demand is shifting toward technology packages that combine gasifiers, air separation, syngas cleaning, and downstream synthesis under single contracts.
Despite strong momentum, the sector faces real challenges. Indian coal has high ash content and variable quality, which makes gasifier selection critical and often requires washed coal. Projects carry high capital cost, five to seven year gestation periods, and import duties on key equipment, while indigenous technology is still mostly at pilot scale. Carbon dioxide capture and storage is also at an early stage. However, capital incentives, long-term coal linkages, and growing operating experience are expected to ease these pressures over time.
Looking ahead, opportunities are emerging in coal-to-methanol and coal-to-SNG plants, blue hydrogen and ammonia, underground coal gasification blocks, and carbon capture integration. Closer partnership between coal producers, equipment makers, gas utilities, fertilizer companies, and technology licensors is speeding up project execution, placing domestic gasification on a long-term, value-led growth path through 2032.

Coal gasification in India is entering a structural upcycle where access to coal linkages, proven gasifier technology for high-ash coal, and the ability to deliver large integrated plants on schedule will separate long-term leaders from the rest. As incentive schemes scale up and the 100 million tonne target draws closer, demand is shifting toward larger, technology-intensive, and product-focused gasification projects, noted a senior analyst at Market Research Outlook.
