India Carbon Credit Market Growing at CAGR 24.8% to Reach USD 5,850 Million by 2032

India's carbon credit market is going through a structural reset, moving away from a largely export-led voluntary offset base toward a dual market where the domestic Carbon Credit Trading Scheme (CCTS), voluntary corporate buying, and Article 6 cross-border transfers operate side by side across power, heavy industry, agriculture, and forestry.

According to Market Research Outlook's latest research report, the "India Carbon Credit Market" is expected to grow from USD 1,240 million in 2025 to USD 5,850 million by 2032, at a CAGR of 24.8%, supported by the start of compliance trading under the CCTS, emission intensity targets for about 490 obligated entities, rising corporate net zero commitments, and India's deep pipeline of renewable energy, cookstove, and nature-based credit projects.

India's carbon credit sector is entering a new growth phase, with demand shifting from one-off international offset sales toward recurring domestic compliance demand, high-integrity removal credits, and government-backed transfers under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.

What is changing is not only the volume of credits, but the reason they are bought. Cement, aluminium, refinery, and textile producers now treat carbon credits as a compliance cost line, while IT exporters, airlines, and consumer brands increasingly use them to manage CBAM exposure, investor scrutiny, and supply chain decarbonisation targets.

This shift is being reinforced by the Indian Carbon Market Portal launched in March 2026, CERC trading regulations notified in February 2026, eight approved offset methodologies, and the Green Credit Programme. As a result, carbon credits are increasingly treated as a priced and regulated asset class in India, tailored to sector-specific targets rather than sold as a uniform offset product.

Market growth is closely linked to the rollout of the CCTS, under which the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change notified emission intensity targets for aluminium, cement, chlor-alkali, and pulp and paper in October 2025, followed by petroleum refining, petrochemicals, and textiles in January 2026, with FY 2023-24 as the baseline. Renewable energy majors such as Adani Green Energy, ReNew, NTPC, Greenko, and Tata Power hold large credit-generating portfolios, while project developers including EKI Energy Services, Emergent Ventures India, Varaha, and Grow Indigo are scaling cookstove, agroforestry, and soil carbon projects across states.

At the same time, obligated plants across Gujarat, Maharashtra, Odisha, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, and Chhattisgarh are preparing for monthly Carbon Credit Certificate (CCC) trading on the Indian Energy Exchange, Power Exchange India, and Hindustan Power Exchange, with Grid Controller of India operating the registry and the Bureau of Energy Efficiency issuing certificates, creating steady domestic demand for verified credits.

Project development is increasingly focused on higher-integrity credit types, including agroforestry and soil carbon removals, biochar, methane capture from landfills and rice paddies, efficient cookstoves with metered usage data, and renewable energy paired with storage. As a result, demand is gradually shifting toward credits with stronger measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV) records and clear community co-benefits, supporting higher price realisation for removal and livelihood-linked projects.

Despite this strong momentum, the domestic carbon market continues to face challenges. Low average prices for legacy renewable energy credits, unclear rules on whether offset credits can be used for CCTS compliance, and limited MRV capacity for smallholder agriculture and forestry projects remain key concerns. Questions over additionality and corresponding adjustments under Article 6 add further complexity. However, approved offset methodologies, the national registry, and the accreditation of verification bodies are gradually easing these pressures over time.

Looking ahead, opportunities are emerging across compliance demand from seven notified sectors, Article 6 transfers with partner countries, nature-based removals from agroforestry and soil carbon, and CBAM-linked buying by Indian exporters to Europe. Increasing collaboration between obligated industries, project developers, power exchanges, and verification bodies is also improving price discovery, liquidity, and credit quality, positioning carbon credits in India for sustained, transparent, and inclusive growth through 2032.
