India Green Ammonia Market Growing at CAGR 89.6% to Reach USD 1,640 Million by 2032

India’s green ammonia market is moving out of the pilot stage and into commercial scale, as fertilizer plants, exporters and port authorities begin to replace natural gas based grey ammonia with ammonia made from renewable hydrogen, backed by long-term offtake contracts, mission-led incentives and fast-falling renewable power tariffs.

According to Market Research Outlook’s latest research report, the “India Green Ammonia Market“ is expected to grow from USD 18.6 million in 2025 to USD 1,640 million by 2032, at a CAGR of 89.6%, supported by the National Green Hydrogen Mission, the 724,000 tonnes per year of green ammonia contracted through SECI auctions for fertilizer units, binding export offtake deals with buyers in Germany and Japan, and large coastal production complexes now under construction in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha.

India’s green ammonia market is entering a new growth phase. Demand that was limited to demonstration plants a few years ago is now locked into ten-year supply contracts with fertilizer makers, and into export agreements that cover several hundred thousand tonnes a year.

What is changing is not only volume but the role of the product itself. Fertilizer companies, power utilities, shipping lines and overseas buyers now treat green ammonia as a decarbonization tool, a way to move hydrogen over long distances, and a hedge against imported gas prices, rather than as a laboratory concept.

This shift is backed by the SIGHT programme, the green hydrogen hubs notified at Deendayal (Kandla), Paradip and V.O. Chidambaranar (Tuticorin) ports, the waiver of inter-state transmission charges for eligible projects, and the green ammonia emission standard notified by MNRE in 2026. Green ammonia is therefore being planned as strategic national infrastructure, with projects sized for specific domestic and export buyers.

The growth of the India green ammonia market is closely tied to the SECI tender programme, under which 724,000 tonnes per year of green ammonia was awarded in 2025 to supply fertilizer units across the country at a volume-weighted average delivered price of USD 605 per tonne, under ten-year fixed price contracts. Developers such as AM Green, ACME, ReNew, Adani New Industries and Reliance Industries are building integrated renewable power, electrolyser and ammonia synthesis capacity, while engineering and technology firms including L&T, Ohmium International, Sembcorp, Avaada and Jakson Green are scaling equipment supply and project execution across coastal states.

At the same time, project activity across Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Rajasthan is rising quickly, helped by state green hydrogen policies, land banks near ports, and the export agreements signed by AM Green with Uniper for up to 500,000 tonnes per year and by ACME with IHI for 0.4 million tonnes per year. Together these create steady demand for renewable power, electrolysers, storage terminals and ammonia carriers across the sector.

Technology development is focused on lowering delivered cost. Alkaline electrolysers remain the workhorse for large plants, PEM units are gaining share where flexible operation is needed, and hybrid solar-wind supply with battery and pumped storage is being used to raise electrolyser utilisation toward round-the-clock levels. Domestic electrolyser manufacturing support for 3,000 MW of annual capacity under SIGHT is also bringing down equipment costs. As a result, the delivered cost of green ammonia is moving closer to imported grey ammonia, improving the commercial case for fertilizer, export and bunkering buyers.

Despite this progress, the market still faces real constraints. Production costs remain above grey ammonia, round-the-clock renewable supply depends on storage and transmission that is still being built, and most plants rely on imported electrolyser stacks and high-cost project finance. Fresh water availability at coastal sites adds a further layer of complexity. However, falling auction prices, the 2026 green ammonia standard and wider certification under the national scheme are steadily reducing these risks.

Looking ahead, opportunities are opening up in green ammonia bunkering at Indian ports, long-term export supply to Japan, Korea and Europe, co-firing in coal power plants, and certified low-carbon fertilizer. Closer cooperation between renewable developers, fertilizer producers, port authorities and international buyers is speeding up financial closure and plant construction, placing the industry on track for sustained, export-linked growth through 2032.
